News and Resources Related to the BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill at the Deepwater Horizon Drilling Station

On April 20th, 2010, the oil rig Deepwater Horizon, located 50 miles off the shore of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded killing 11 platform workers and injuring 17 others. As a result of the demise of the Deepwater Horizon platform, 20,000 to 40,000 barrels of crude oil per day began to pour into the Gulf. In addition to hurting tourism, this ecological disaster is ruining the habitats of local animals, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of birds, turtles, dolphins, and other species.

The sad fact is that, even after the flow of oil is stopped, it will take years to clean up the wet lands that were ruined, and that effort won’t fully restore this delicate environment to its previous state.

As Alabama natives, we’re concerned. In early June, we launched this site to help compile news from various sources from traditional news to social media to help bring more awareness to the state of the disaster.
